Happy Birthday, Girl Scouts!

Today, Girl Scouts is celebrating its' 104th birthday! That's 104 years of empowering girls and giving them the courage, confidence, and character they need to make the world a better place. 104 years of taking part in community service, completing the highest awards, earning badges, and showing everyone just what it means to be a Girl Scout. We are inspired by our 104-year past and we can't wait to see where the next 104 years take us!

We received a lot of stories for 30 Days of Good Deeds and we are impressed by everyone's community service initiatives. Below, we made a culmination of even more Good Deeds storiesenjoy!

Troop #20485 Collects Pennies for Puppies

At their February 22, 2016 Daisy meeting, Troop #20485 in Verona hosted Sharon Kessel, a volunteer with The Seeing Eye program, and the puppy that she is raising for the program. The girls hosted her as part of the meeting where they earned their Consideration and Caring petal.

Sharon's presentation was very informative and the girls learned a great deal about how Seeing Eye dogs are raised and trained and how they help individuals who are blind. And they loved meeting the puppy!

The girls took home "penny boxes" that they are using to collect change for the "Pennies for Puppies" program that benefits The Seeing Eye. They are earning pennies by doing good deeds at home for their parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. At their March 21st Daisy meeting, the girls will collect the boxes and puppies and send their donation to The Seeing Eye!

Troop #20585 also donated cookies to The Human Needs Pantry! As part of their cookie sale, the Daisies in Verona took orders for cookies that will be donated to the Human Needs Pantry in Montclair. The girls sold a total of 48 boxes that will be donated. The Human Needs Food Pantry provides food, clothing, and other services to people in need who live in Montclair and neighboring communities in Essex County, including Verona. Their diverse client base includes, families and singles who are elderly, disabled, home-bound, unemployed or underemployed. The Food Pantry staff shared with the Troop that the clients always really appreciate donated cookies!

Troop #60480 Made Valentine's Day Cards for Seniors

GS Brownie Troop #60480 made Valentine's Day a little brighter for the residents of Brandywine Assisted Living in Bridgewater. For the second year, each of the eight girls who attended made their own handmade Valentine's cards and personally delivered them to residents on Valentine's Day. The residents loved the special cards and having the visits from the girls; many of whom told the girls it was the only Valentine they had received. The girls enjoyed visiting with the residents and they are looking forward to returning to Brandywine again next year!
