Each year, on the third Monday of January, we all celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an influential American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to ending racial segregation and promote racial equality everywhere.

Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, but it wasn't until the year 2000 that it became observed in all states. MLK had a way with words (as evidenced by his famous "I Have a Dream" speech), so we've rounded up 10 of our favorite Martin Luther King quotes to live by:

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?"

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

"Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude."

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

"Peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold."

"The time is always right to do what is right."
