Ever wonder how the GSHNJ camps get ready for the spring and summer camping season? Annually, we hold a Work Weekend! Work Weekend is an opportunity for individuals, families, friends, and troops to spend the weekend at Camp Lou Henry Hoover and give something back to the beautiful 340-acre camp.
Everyone attending Work Weekend helps revitalize the camp after the long, hard winter and prepare it for the spring and summer camping season. This past weekend, approximately 80 volunteers to came out to support the camp and we are so grateful for their hard work!
Saturday started off with rain, but that did not dampen the spirit of the volunteers! The work crews set off in full force to tackle the list of projects. In the tent units, platform repairs were being completed and the plumbing was repaired after the long winter. Volunteers could be found sorting through donations, cleaning rooms, and organizing supplies for our campers to use.
The work didn't just happen indoors. Groups of volunteers were found splitting and stacking firewood, spreading soil and grass seed, and cleaning up down branches and trees from the tent sites.
Without the help of these volunteers, who provided about 640 hours of service alone this weekend, Camp Hoover wouldn’t be ready for the camping season! Thank you so much to this great group of volunteers - Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, families, council staff and friends -you all helped to make Camp Hoover the best it can be!
There's always something to do at our camps! Are you interested in helping? Sign up for The OVAL Work Day on Saturday, April 30th or contact Deb Hooker or Debbie McGahan for more volunteer opportunities!
