5 Tips For Raising a Girl with Confidence
Building a solid base of self-confidence is tricky, especially if you're a girl. Young girls deal with so many mixed messages, and it's hard to stay positive and confident when media messages are conflicted. Looking for ways to boost your daughter's confidence? We came up with five great ways to make sure she builds confidence that will last a lifetime.
1. Be her cheerleader. Cheer her on in everything she does. Is she trying a new sport? Spend time practicing with her in the backyard, and give her tips on ways she can do better. Does she want to pick up a new hobby? Encourage her that trying new things is great and that she should always try to do her best in anything she has an interest in.
2. Encourage her to be independent. There are so many ways you can encourage your daughter to form a solid independence. Start small by having her order her own food when you're out at a restaurant. She'll be able to make smart decisions about what she would like to eat and she will gain confidence as she interacts with the servers. Once you give her the foundation for independence, she'll be able to apply that to anything she does, like asking a question at school or offering advice to a friend.
3. Ask her for help. Even if you already know the answer or feel as though you can do something without assistance, ask your daughter to help. Not only will she feel empowered to be able to provide assistance, but you and your daughter will bond and form a deeper relationship. She'll realize that you can depend on her, and you'll get a better understanding of what her strong suits are and what areas she needs to build confidence in.
4. Stay positive. It's so hard to stay positive sometimes, but nothing is more important than looking on the bright side and keeping an upbeat attitude. When your daughter fails at something, make a list of all of the positive things that came out of her failure. Be sure to let her know that even though her efforts didn't work, the lessons that she was able to learn and the steps she took to try to complete a project far outweigh the fact that things didn't work out.
5. Lend a compliment. Don't miss a chance to tell your daughter that she's doing a great job! Did she tell a funny joke? Was she able to teach her younger brother how to tie his shoes? Did she take the initiative when it came to the chore chart? Pull her aside and let her know that you noticed, and that you appreciate her.
