30 Days of Good Deeds:Troop #60935 Helps Operation Shoebox

Girl Scouts meet new people and learn useful skills every day, but as Juniors, they start realizing that what they accomplish has a lasting impact on themselves and the community around them. Nine Junior Girl Scouts from Troop #60935 got the opportunity to participate in something truly specialOperation Shoebox's 11th Anniversary Packing Event!

The girls joined over 400 volunteers including six linemen from the Rutgers University football team, fraternity brothers from NJIT, Somerville Mayor Brian Gallagher, and soliders and recruits from the Somerville Recruitment Office to assemble boxes at the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW in Manville. The volunteers were able to pack 1,100 boxes during the event!

Operation Shoebox is an organization that collects and ships care packages of basic necessities like toothbrushes and deodorant and treats (like Girl Scout cookies!) to those serving in our military and armed forces overseas. To date, Operation Shoebox NJ has shipped over 73,000 total packages to U.S. military personnel serving in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan among other posts in the Middle East.

Check out this time-lapse video below to get a sense of how busy an Operation Shoebox packing event is!

We are still collecting stories for our 30 Days of Good Deeds! Is your Troop doing something amazing? Do you know a Girl Scout who is making a change in her community? Fill out this easy form to submit your Good Deed!
