It may be hard to believe, but we are quickly approaching the start of spring. March kicks off an important month for women across the nation, and is particularly relevant for us here at Girl Scouts—Women’s History Month.
Women’s History Month originated in 1981 when congress passed Pub. L. 97-28, which requested the President proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Eventually congress took further steps, and starting in 1995, every President issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” During this month we celebrate the exceptional women who have changed our communities, nation and world by being innovative leaders, drivers of change, and inspirations to us all.
Coincidentally, our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, organized the very first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia. Her vision and passion were progressive for her time and we celebrate her work during Girl Scout Week—also held in March.
As the premier leadership development organization for girls in the nation, Girl Scouts empowers girls to step outside their comfort zones, challenge themselves, and ideas so that they, and our communities, grow. Through the various Girl Scout pathways, girls develop their own leadership style and set the vision for their future. As an organization, we are always inspired by the girls we serve and find that when we let them lead the dialogue—we always arrive at a better place than when we started.
And that’s why we'd like to hand the girls of GSHNJ the “virtual microphone.”
Throughout the month of March—Women’s History Month and Girl Scout Week—we're asking that girls work with their parents and troop leaders to create short Instagram videos, sharing how they are #makingwomenshistory with #GirlScoutsHeartofNJ.
Think about all the exceptional work you’re doing. Get together and ask yourselves what your vision for the future is. What does following in our founder’s footsteps mean to you? What mark are you leaving on our community? We would love to hear from you.
Follow us on Instagram (@girlscoutshnj), create a short video, and tag us using #makingwomenshistory and #GirlScoutsHeartofNJ. We will also be sharing a few of our own videos!
During Women’s History Month, let’s honor our founder’s history by letting our girls lead the discussion.
