Introducing Our Robotics Team... Shestormz!

Photo: Shestormz at their robotics competition on November 21st.

This fall marked the inaugural season of GSHNJ's FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team, the Shestormz! The team began meeting this summer and started working on their robot after this year's FLL challenge was released in August. The Shestormz designed and programmed their robot to complete specific tasks--and aside from working on their new gadget--the team created and presented a research project all while doing some serious team building.

The theme of this year's competition was Trash Trek, which explored growing waste management problems in communities across the world. The girls decided to focus their research on cell phone waste and the effects technological trash has on our environment as a whole.

Over the weekend, the girls presented their project on the Effects of Cell Phones and met with members of the Montclair Society of Engineers to discuss their robot design and to showcase their teamwork.

During the competition, the girls had three chances to run their robot programming in matches against other area teams. Shestormz showed great grace under pressure during the robot runs and highlighted their new programming skills by adding a new piece in between matches--no pressure! And in true Girl Scout fashion, Shestormz let several other teams utilize their practice field if space was limited.

The girls are looking forward to meeting occasionally in the off-season to brush up on their skills, learn new things, and meet with other teams to prepare for next year's competition!

Way to go, Shestormz!
