30 Days of Good Deeds:Troop #80198 Participates in 13th Annual MLK Day

On Martin Luther King Day, Troop #80198 stepped up and spent the day volunteering their time at the Clinton Community Center for a very special MLK Community Service event! Read all about their experiences during day 5 of our 30 Days of Good Deeds.

On Monday, January 18th, Cadette Girl Scout Troop #80198 participated in the 13th annual Martin Luther King Day and Community Service event at the Clinton Community Center from noon until two in the afternoon. This event keeps getting larger every year! This year, approximately 200 people participated at the activity tables that lined the wall of the center. People rotated through stations depending on their interest.

Some activity stations included creating special dog toys from strips of plush material (to be donated to dogs at area animal shelters), writing letters to active-duty soldiers, creating valentines for veterans at Veterans Haven North, drawing or coloring a picture for Color-a-Smile, assembling meal kits for SHIP, cutting coupons for use by military families, and making pinwheels to benefit the Healing Classrooms program for youth in Syria just to name a few.

Seven of the girls contributed their services in three different activities. Their first activity was to host a bake sale. The girls baked goodies such as brownies, cupcakes and cookies and brought them to the event to sell at the entrance way of the Community Center. Close to two hundred dollars was brought in from the bake sale and will be used to buy art supplies and coloring books for the patients at Hunterdon Medical Center to pass the time while receiving life-saving treatment.

For their second activity, the girls hosted a busy table where they had people create and decorate get well cards and thinking of you cards for the patients at Hunterdon Medical Center. For their third and final activity, they led a station where attendants could decorate pillowcases for patients with longer stays at the hospital. The girls thought it would be a great way to remind the patients that they were in their thoughts for a speedy recovery!

Girl Scout Troop #80198 are a great example of how important community service is! We applaud them for all their hard work to make this another successful event!
